REVIEW: Circus, London.
27-29 Endell St, London WC2H 9BA
Last night my partner and I spent the evening with a couple of friends at Circus in London’s Covent Garden.
Having left the City of London around 6pm it was quite the adventure to get to reach our destination on foot, via New Street Square (to collect aforementioned better-half), in time for our 7 o’clock dinner reservation. We had worked up quite the thirst by the time we arrived.
After being shown to our seats we were greeted with a glass of fizz which went a small way to quenching said thirst, but not fully. A few bottles of ice cold Cobra later = mission complete.
And boy was the cold beer needed. The temperature was about to rise!
Each course came with its own entertainment package. You guessed it, all very much circus themed. Up first came a ceiling-swinging cowboy, which I have to be honest, I felt quite dizzy by just watching. Next we were treated to probably the strongest person I’ve ever seen - I’m not quite sure what to call this act but the performer did a one armed handstand on a pole which was ten feet in the air. And to wash it all down we had a fire eating explosion of energy writhing around the stage.
The food is Asian-fusion and was good overall. The menu is not too big, and the food came full of flavour and well presented.
One criticism is that the evening, whilst a lot of fun, felt a little “rushed”. It was only at the end of our evening did this make sense. We were the early sitting and we required to leave ASAP so they could set up for the second showing. No wonder it took about 90 seconds from us ordering our starters to them being delivered. Nothing like knowing your food has been sat on a kitchen side for the past 20 minutes just waiting for your arrival.
I would say this is a disappointment to have been ejected after dinner so dramatically as clearly we were all enjoying our evening.
I won’t pretend to be a food critic so I’ll keep my reviews to these simple questions:
Would I recommend Circus? Yes, to someone who has not been before it is a lot of fun.
Would I go back? Probably not - not that it’s bad, just that it’s ticked off the list now.
Did I enjoy it? Yes, a great evening. Nothing particularly outstanding, good or bad.
Value for money? A little on the expensive side but you are paying for some seriously talented entertainers, not just your steak and chips.
